Last May 10, 2025, a webinar with the theme: Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Care Webinar "Advancing Knowledge and Improving Outcomes for Chemotherapy and Radiation Oncology Nurses” was conducted. This was a joint initiative between the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology and the Philippine Oncology Nurses Association underscoring PSMO’s commitment to equipping nurses with the expertise needed to provide the highest quality care to cervical cancer patients across the Philippines.
The discussion was particularly timely as May marks Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder of the urgent need for improved prevention, screening, and treatment efforts. Every year, approximately 7,897 women in the Philippines are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and sadly, about 4,052 lose their lives to this disease. It ranks as the second most common cancer among Filipino women, yet screening rates remain alarmingly low, with only about 1% of women undergoing screening. While HPV vaccination is part of our National Immunization Program, coverage remains limited, leaving many women vulnerable to this preventable disease.
A distinguished panel of experts namely: Dr. Jason King Talao, a medical oncologist, Dr. Genalyn Amparo, a gynecologic oncologist and Dr. Frances Lily Peñano, a radiation oncologist, guided the audience through the entire spectrum of cervical cancer care, from prevention and screening to early diagnosis, multi-disciplinary treatment, and post-treatment management, while Nurses Suha Hassan Magdy Mohammed Ibrahim, Angelica Eballar and Erwin Mendoza expertly discussed nursing care for cervical cancer patients undergoing systemic and radiation therapy respectively. A multi-disciplinary approach to a real-world case presentation and practical aspects of nursing care capped the webinar, ensuring that the discussions translate into actionable improvements in patient management.
Nurses are at the frontline of cervical cancer care, offering expertise, compassion, and unwavering support to patients throughout their journey. By coming together to share insights, experiences, and best practices, we can enhance patient outcomes and bridge gaps in access to care.
This meaningful dialogue was organized by PSMO External Affairs (National) Chair, Dr. Herdee Luna and PONA President, Ms. Alyssa Jenny Tupaz, in coordination with Multi-Media Chair, Dr. Danielle Leonardo. Together with our nursing partners, let us continue to make the most of the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and inspire better cervical cancer care for Filipino women.
