On February 4, 2026, the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO) played a vital role in a landmark moment for Philippine healthcare during the World Cancer Day celebration at the PMA Auditorium. Under the theme "United by Team: Strengthening the Local Cancer Network," the PSMO joined forces with the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS), the Philippine Society of Oncologists (PSO), and the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) to launch a historic collaboration between Quezon City and the City Cancer Challenge (C/Can). PSMO’s presence emphasized that modern cancer care requires a seamless integration of medical expertise, community outreach, and policy-driven action.

The event’s morning session was highlighted by a message of support from PSMO President, Dr. Dennis Santos, who reaffirmed the society’s commitment to advancing the practice of medical oncology in the Philippines. Dr. Santos spoke on the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, noting that the complexities of cancer care  necessitate a highly coordinated "team" approach. His address set the stage for the signing of the National Alliance Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), a transformative agreement that formalizes how the nation’s leading medical societies will work together to streamline patient care pathways and optimize resources across the cancer care continuum.

The event was further bolstered by powerful messages of support from esteemed patient advocates Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, Founding President of ICANSERVE Foundation, and Menchi Auste, CEO of Cancer Warriors Foundation. Their participation highlighted the "heart" of the team—the patients and survivors—reminding the assembly that policy and clinical practice must always be rooted in the lived experience of the community. Their messages underscored the importance of early detection and the need for a compassionate, navigation-centered healthcare system.

Beyond the ceremonial signing, the PSMO’s contribution to the event was deeply rooted in clinical and strategic excellence. By participating in the "United By Team" Pledge, PSMO delegates publicly committed to prioritizing cancer control at the community level, focusing on early screening and improved access to specialized medical resources. The society’s role is particularly crucial in the implementation of the ACT NOW Startup Operations Manual, where PSMO’s expertise ensures that systemic treatment protocols and referral pathways are standardized and evidence-based. This ensures that a patient diagnosed in a local health center can be efficiently navigated to the specialized care they require without unnecessary delays.

A critical highlight of the technical program was the comprehensive Carcinogenics Lecture, which provided an in-depth analysis of environmental and lifestyle triggers contributing to the local cancer burden. The session focused on identifying high-risk exposures within the community and translating complex oncogenic data into actionable prevention strategies.

To address the practical "care gaps" identified in the patient journey, the event featured the strategic participation of DOH-Cancer Control Division, PhilHealth and TESDA. Justine Anne Gabrielle S. Dela Pasion, RND, MD, Medical Officer III of the DOH Cancer Control Division, provided a comprehensive discussion on existing cancer control initiatives. Dr. Dela Pasion highlighted the continued expansion of the National Integrated Cancer Control Program (NICCP), specifically focusing on the 2024–2028 Strategic Framework. She detailed the progress of the Cancer Assistance Fund (CAF) and the Cancer and Supportive-Palliative Medicines Access Program (CSPMAP), which now provides free essential medicines across 36 access sites nationwide. Dr. Dela Pasion emphasized the DOH's transition toward Shared Care Networks, where Level III specialty hospitals mentor provincial facilities to decentralize high-quality care, ensuring that life-saving interventions reach the grassroots level.

PhilHealth representatives outlined enhanced coverage packages and specialized benefits aimed at reducing the financial toxicity associated with cancer treatment, ensuring that clinical recommendations are backed by economic feasibility. Complementing this, TESDA highlighted its role in bridging the human resource gap through specialized training programs for health workers and caregivers. By professionalizing support services and patient navigation, TESDA ensures a steady pipeline of skilled personnel capable of maintaining the high standards of care.

The program culminated in a stirring World Cancer Declaration and Call to Action, led by Dr. Warren Bacorro. Dr. Bacorro delivered a comprehensive vision for the future of Philippine oncology that resonated deeply with the audience, earning a standing ovation. This session, widely documented by the media, highlighted the PSO's strategic contributions to partnership development and its role as a repository of frontline clinical expertise. By aligning with the City Cancer Challenge, the ACT NOW Startup Operations Manual, and key government agencies, the event has solidified its position as a key architect in building a more equitable and integrated cancer care network for every Filipino.

Looking forward, the PSMO is poised to lead the charge in cancer education, capacity building and strengthening local cancer networks. Through continued partnership with local government units and international bodies like C/Can, the society aims to complement life-saving treatments more accessible to Filipinos outside of major metropolitan hubs. By standing "United by Team," the PSMO has solidified its position as an indispensable architect of a future where every Filipino cancer patient—regardless of their location—receives the gold standard of medical care.
