BARANGAYAN OUTREACH IN SIQUIJOR

By: Kristle May R. Cortez, MD

The PSMO organized a Barangay Healthcare Worker Cancer Awareness Caravan last September 6, 2025, at the Larena Queensgate Center, North Poblacion, Larena Siquijor!  This significant event brought together 284 of our dear barangay health workers (BHWs) and cancer survivors, together with 8 medical oncologists from Visayas, namely:  Doctors Ellie May Villegas, Melanie Chua, Jamila de Veyra, Stephen Lopez, Mark Ando, Kristle May Cortez, Amabelle Gerona and Ma. Isabelle Reveldez.

This community-based approach aims to capacitate our local healthcare workers turning them into more effective frontline responders for cancer prevention, screening and even early diagnosis. The lay forum focused on overview of screening, prevention, early diagnosis, management, survivorship, importance of multi-disciplinary approach of three top cancers: Breast, Colorectal and Cervical Cancer.  The session on breast examination and proper performance of clinical breast examination by the BHW was another highlight in this activity.

PSMO acknowledges the participation of the Department of Health, Mayor Cyrus Calibo of Larena Municipality, Siquijor, Dr. Jemma Fortich (MHO of Larena, Siquijor), and   Atty. Michael Panzo (President of the Rotary Club Siquijor Central) for their collaborative efforts in making this initiative a success.

Together, let's continue the fight against cancer.
